No COVID-19 testing, treatment facility in Barishal division

There is no proper facility to test for the coronavirus or treat such patients in Barishal division. Barishal division health director Basudev Das said: “Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH), the largest public healthCARE service provider of the division, is hamstrung by a shortage of manpower and personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors and nurses amid the COVID-19 scare.”

SBMCH deputy director Dr Abdur Razzak said if anyone was suspected of contracting the infection, they could only put the patient in the isolation unit of the hospital and then inform IEDCR for proper tests and treatment.

Dr Sudip Kumar Das, president of the Interdepartmental Doctors' Association, and Dr Nurrunnabi Chowdhury Tuhin, president of the Outdoor Doctors' Association, said: “We’ve sent a letter asking the authorities concerned to supply the PPE on an emergency basis.

But we haven’t received any reply yet.”

Divisional Health Directorate sources say 1,510 foreign-returnees have so far been home-quarantined in six districts of the division.

Among them, 356 are from Barishal district, 282 from Patuakhali, 248 from Bhola, 249 from Pirojpur, 220 from Barguna, and 145 from Jhalakathi districts. Besides, 10 of the foreign-returness are from Barishal City Corporation areas.

Law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation with the help of local administration.

Meanwhile, one person has been admitted to the isolation unit of the Barishal SBMCH and another at Barguna General Hospital for observation and intensive testing by IEDCR. There are only 384 beds at isolation units set up in six districts and 135 beds in Barishal city, according to sources in the Divisional Health Directorate.
