Nat’l unity to beat coronavirus: AL

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Nat’l unity to beat coronavirus: AL

Awami League (AL) General Secretary, Obaidul Quader, has underscored the need for national unity to combat the deadly coronavirus pandemic. He also urged all to follow "stay at home" rules to curb transmission of the virus. “A quarter with vested interests is criticising the government and playing politics of division when the need is to build national unity to beat the coronavirus,” he said while briefing the media at Sheikh Hasina's political office in Dhanmondi yesterday.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the people together defeated the enemy in the 1971 Liberation War.

“Tackling the coronavirus is also a war. Staying home is your key responsibility in this war. With the combined effort of all, we will win this war,” he added.

He further said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her address on Wednesday, called upon the people to stay home to stop the spread of the coronavirus. He also said the whole world is going through a deep crisis and uncertainty due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Prime Minister, as the guardian of the nation, addressed the nation a day before Independence Day, giving instructions in tackling the crisis, he added.

“And we should follow her guidelines to minimise the risk of transmission of the coronavirus in the country,” he said.

Quader also said the Prime Minister, in her address, instructed the authorities concerned to provide assistance to the poor and working people during the 10-day holiday announced by the government aimed at stopping the spread

of coronavirus. He said PM Hasina assured people of providing shelters, food, and cash to the homeless and landless. She also assured people that Vulnerable Group Development (VGD), the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programmes and other safety-net programmes will continue, he added.

Quader said the Prime Minister has announced a Tk. 5,000-crore incentive package for the industrial sector and that factory owners must pay the salaries of their workers from it. At the start of the press conference, Quader greeted the people and AL leaders and workers on the occasion of Independence and National Day.
