8 held for spreading coronavirus rumours in Dhaka, Thakurgaon

Police on Saturday arrested eight persons from different areas in Dhaka and Thakurgaon on charges of spreading rumours and misleading information on the coronavirus outbreak.

The arrestees are Nur Alam (27), Mahfuz (27), Awkad Hossain (53), Ferdous Hasan Titu (25), Tawhidul Islam (25), Muslim Uddin (23), Mofizul Islam (20) and Farid Hossain (20).

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said a team of law enforcers first arrested Awkad while he was distributing leaflets in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Based on his information, five others were detained from the capital's Mouchak area, he added.

Tanvirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station, said Mahfuz updated his Facebook status, claiming that Thakurgaon has confirmed three coronavirus cases. Within a few moments, Nur Alam shared the post.

“We arrested them from Goalpara and Haipara of the town in the afternoon,” he said, adding that they were accused under the Digital Security Act.
