Women cricketers to get BCB financial support

Sports Reporter, Dhaka
Women cricketers to get BCB financial support

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday announced a one-time monetary support for all contracted and non-contracted women cricketers scheduled to play in the Women's National Cricket League in the 2019–20 season.

Each of them will get a one-time sum of Tk 20,000 from the board to meet their expenses. Like other sporting events, the current edition of the Women's National Cricket League, scheduled to start from March this year, has been halted indefinitely due to the global coronavirus outbreak.

All women cricketers who had appeared in the Women’s National Cricket League in the 2018–19 session, along with those who have been in the BCB’s Under-19 selection camps for the 2019–2020 session, will get the pecuniary support.

Around 130 women cricketers will get the monetary benefit.

The BCB organises the national league for women cricketers with the participation of eight divisional teams. Each team consists of 14 players.

So, 112 players were slated to take part in the league. This time, the BCB conducted a training camp of 41 players ahead of the ICC Women' Under-19 World Cup. Twenty players from the camp were enlisted to play in the league.

“Just like their male counterparts, most women cricketers look forward to playing domestic cricket to earn their bread and butter. Besides, we had training camps scheduled for women players, but they have been hampered by the prevailing COVID-19 situation. The cricketers have been forced to be inactive and need our support,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said. Earlier, the BCB president had declared a one-time monetary support for non-contracted male cricketers playing in the Dhala Premier League. Players who are not in the BCB’s central contract list of national cricketers or contract list of first-class players got a one-time amount of Tk 30,000 from the board to meet their expenses.

The Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2019–20 was postponed on March 19 after completion of just one round of matches in compliance with a directive from the youth and sports ministry as part of measures taken by the government to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.

“With the tournament looking at an indefinite period of shutdown, cricketers who are not part of the BCB contracts are likely to face financial hardship. This assistance is for that section of the players,” Papon said.
