Celebrities pay tribute to late Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan

Acclaimed Indian actor Irrfan Khan, whose international movie career included hits such as "Slumdog Millionaire", "Life of Pi" and "The Amazing Spider-Man", has died aged 53, his publicist said on Wednesday.

The Bollywood star, who was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, was admitted to a Mumbai hospital earlier this week with a colon infection.

The shocking news of the actor’s demise was first shared by director Shoojit Sircar on social media.

The film fraternity paid tribute to the late actor on Twitter.

Renowned Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Shabana Azmi, R Madhavan, Sonam Kapoor, Shoojit Sircar, Mini Mathur, Neelesh Misra, Priyanka Chopra, Bhumi Pednekar, Parineeti Chopra, Sanjay Suri, Akshay Kumar, Kajol and many others took to social media to express their condolences.

Amitabh Bachchan, who co-starred with Irrfan Khan in the 2015 film Piku, wrote: "Just getting news of the passing of Irfaan Khan. This is a most disturbing and sad news...

An incredible talent... A gracious colleague, a prolific contributor to the world of cinema. Left us too soon. Creating a huge vacuum. Prayers and duas."

Akshay Kumar addressed the Namesake star as "one of the finest actors of our time."

Director Soojit Sarcar added, "My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. We shall meet again.. condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. You too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute."

Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan Khan's co-star in 7 Khoon Maaf, shared a still from the film with the actor. "The charisma you brought to everything you did was pure magic. Your talent forged the way for so many in so many avenues.. You inspired so many of us. Irrfan Khan you will truly be missed. Condolences to the family,' she wrote.

Actor Anupam Kher also expressed his sadness,"Nothing can be more heartbreaking and tragic than the news of passing away of a dear friend, one of the finest actors and a wonderful human being #IrrfanKhan. Saddest day!! May his soul rest in peace."

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan also paid tribute to Irrfan Khan. He wrote: "Too soon to leave Irrfan Khan. Your work always left me in awe. You're one of the finest actors I know, I wish you stayed longer. You deserved more time. Strength to the family at this time."

"Heartbroken to hear about Irrfan's untimely demise. It's an irreparable loss for Indian cinema. Deepest condolences to his wife and sons. RIP Irrfan," tweeted Ajay Devgn.

"Rest in peace Irrfan Khan. You have no idea what your kindness meant to me at a time I was at my least confident . My condolences to your family and loved ones," tweeted Sonam Kapoor.

Shabana Azmi tweeted on Wednesday morning, "Deeply saddened to learn that Irffan Khan passed away this morning. Gone too soon. Such a powerful actor and how valiantly he fought back the cancer. It's a big loss not only to his family but to the entire film industry. RIP."

"Irrfan sir, you were the nicest, coolest guy. Every interaction with you was so memorable. The world has lost the most talented actor, the nicest human being and a real fighter!! All my love and strength to the family," tweeted Parineeti Chopra.

Ever since the news broke, fans have been also taking to social media to remember the actor.

A fan wrote, "This is so heartbreaking ..Broken heart We lost a pure soul today. Life is so cruel !! Rest in peace, Sir. You will be missed... #IrrfanKhan."

A fan shared Irrfan's note and wrote, "What a heart-wrenching news! Rest In Peace, Champ Folded handsFolded handsFolded hands This is what he wrote sometime back....how true! Down pointing backhand index #IrrfanKhan."

Another fan penned a heartfelt note and wrote, "An artist who stayed true to his work and was the most unproblematic celebrity. I don’t know why you were taken so early. Thank you for bringing change into the world of cinema, your contribution shall always remain superior. Irrfan was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Mumbai, where he took his last breath. He is survived by wife Sutapa Sikder, and sons Babil and Ayan.

Irrfan Khan's impressive filmography included projects like Maqbool, Haasil, Paan Singh Tomar, Haider, Pinku, Talvar and the Academy Award-nominated Salaam Bombay! He has also been a part of international projects like The Namesake, Life Of Pi, Inferno, Slumdog Millionaire and The Warrior among others. His last project was Angrezi Medium, co-starring Kareena Kapoor and Radhika Madan.
