ICC issues guidelines for resumption of cricket

World cricket’s governing body International Cricket Council (ICC) has released guidelines for the safe resumption of cricket to assist its members in restarting cricket activities in their respective countries as the government restrictions owing to COVID-19 start to relax.

“ICC Back to Cricket Guidelines” is a comprehensive document developed by the ICC Medical Advisory Committee in consultation with Member Medical Representatives, and provides guidance for the safe resumption of community cricket, domestic professional cricket and international cricket.

The guidelines do not provide answers to when the game can resume in different parts of the world, rather provide a framework with practical suggestions on how members can resume cricket in a manner that protects against the risk of transmission of or infection with the COVID-19 virus.

The ICC advises its members to use these guidelines as the basis to create their own policies for return to cricket activity in compliance, in all cases, with local and national government regulations (which should always take precedence) and to ensure the cricket community applies the necessary safety measures when resuming cricket.

However, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) earlier announced that they would start preparing its model to get in hand the guidelines of the ICC as the world cricket’s highest authority.

The BCB will also prepare a guideline as soon as possible in line with these guidelines, said BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) prepared a primary guideline and uploaded it on its website under which they have suggested players to start training individually.

Braving the fear of the coronavirus pandemic, England pace duo Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes started individual training at Trent Bridge (Nottingham) and Edgbaston (Birmingham) respectively.

England have a string of tours against Pakistan, West Indies, Australia and India ahead for which they have devised their own mechanism to resume cricket as early as possible before getting the guideline from the world cricket apex body.

But Cricket Australia (CA), according to him, is slightly ahead than its British counterparts as the CA has already fixed a schedule to start its T20 Cricket Tournament. As per the schedule, the tournament will get underway on June 6.

However, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is not lagging behind their English and Australian counterparts as it is also on the stage of preparing its own course.
