ICC meeting on Thursday to decide fate of T20 WC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to hold an online emergency meeting on May 28 (Thursday) to decide the fate of T20 World Cup-- slated to roll onto the ground in Australia on October 18.

Still more than four and half-a-months left before the upcoming ICC World Cup as the extravaganza over 20-overs format set to start in mid-October with its Round-1 games. Despite having so many days in hand, rumours and speculations are rife surrounding the mega event whether it’ll be held in due time because of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic has already wiped the smile off sportmen’s faces.

The cricketing countries especially “big three” (England, Australia and India) are desperately trying to resume cricket as if they couldn’t endure the delay any longer. England among them prepared their own guidelines before ICC’s initiatives and permitted players to resume individual training after which Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes started training at Trent Bridge (Nottingham) and Edgbaston (Birmingham) respectively.

India categorically allowed players to restart individual training after which pacer Shardul Thakur hit a local ground at Boisar in Maharashtra’s Palghar district along with some domestic cricketers.

The ICC, meanwhile, released guidelines for the safe resumption of cricket to assist its members in restarting cricket activities in their countries. But the guidelines didn’t provide answers to when the game can resume in different parts of the world.

BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said no such decision of delaying World Cup is taken yet by ICC, rather he is hopeful about holding T20 World Cup in due time.

“I’ve no such information about postponing or delaying the World Cup because I haven’t yet received any directives on it. Rather what I know is that the preparations of the ICC regarding the event is going on in full swing. They’re moving forward keeping the scheduled fixture in mind,” Nizamuddin said.

“The situation of the coronavirus will be assessed in the meeting which will be held on May 28 on the back of the cricket boards. I think the event will be held accordingly,” he told The Independent.

Echoeing CEO’s words BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon said a few days back at a cheque handover programme for the athletes of the corona-affected 23 sports federations other than cricket. Papon said that ICC events – not bilateral series-- are the first priority to them. “As of now talks are about rescheduling the T20 World Cup. In this pandemic situation, it’s very hard to say something about bilateral series. I mean to say, we don’t even know when the ICC events will take place. We have to plan or schedule accordingly. It’s a very complex task for everyone alike. We will try to keep as many series possible from the previous schedule,” said Nazmul Hassan adding that we will see what ICC is doing.
