71 bureaucrats corona positive; 7 dead

At least 71 bureaucrats have so far been infected with COVID-19 across the country and seven of them died, sources in the Cabinet Division said. 

Three retired officials also contracted the novel coronavirous until May 28 as the deadly virus claimed over 3.6 lakh lives and affected 58 lakh people across the world. 

The sources said, 40 of the incumbent and former bureaucrats, however, have recovered from the disease.

Of the seven ill-fated bureaucrats, two were additional secretaries, three joint secretaries and two deputy secretaries, they added.

The bureaucrats who lost their lives due to coronavirus infections are additional secretaries Goutam Aich Sarker and Md Towfiqul Alam, joint secretaries Samsul Kibria Chowdhury,  Abdur Rashid and Ishaq Bhuiyan, deputy secretary Saifur Rahman, who worked for the Anti-Corruption

Commission (ACC) as deputy director, and an official of BCS 1970 batch Mohammad Ali.

According to the sources, one official with the rank of secretary (retired), four additional secretaries, six joint secretaries, 14 deputy secretaries and 42 senior assistant secretaries and assistant secretaries have been infected with COVID-19 coronavirus.

A high official of the Cabinet Division, on condition of anonymity, told The Independent that 27 of the corona positive officials were undergoing treatment in different hospitals or in their own residences.

“Of those hospitalised, condition of five is ‘critical’ and they are under ICU (intensive care unit) support in different hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Mugda General Hospital,” the official said.

He said most of the infected bureaucrats are working in the field administration and many of them are female officials.

The officials got infected during their duties at their duty stations, the official informed.

Since the detection of the first case of coronavirus in the country in early March, at least 582 people died and 42,844 got infected with COVID-19 until May 29. A total of 9,015 people also recovered from the disease, according to the health department.
