Covid-19 pandemic: Smart use of technology needed in education

Covid-19 has been declared as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to the outbreak of the disease. Communities worldwide have already started taking actions to prevent further transmission, reduce the impacts of the outbreak, and support control measures.

Children and young learners are the global citizens, powerful agents of the future, and the next generation of caregivers.

To prevent transmission among students schools are shut all across the globe. Research suggests that over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom worldwide. This has led to a dramatic change in the education system over the half of the year. The rise of e-learning activity is quite visible, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely on digital platforms. The sudden shift of the distant learning method has left some wondering whether the online teaching and learning process will continue to persist in the post-pandemic situation and how this process will impact the global education system.

Technology is shaping and directing the education sector today. Using the technology in a smart way is the best possible thing in the education sector during this pandemic. Online learning has been shown to increase the retention of information. However, being “technologically smart” is not only knowing how to manage and operate different apps and devices or gadgets but also being aware of the internet protocols, terms, and privacy policies. Education programmes are aimed at continuing the development of smart, sincere, and responsible digital citizens.

Nevertheless, there are some potential dangers when using the internet and other technologies. Those who are the experts and experienced in using technology must make it safer for others and help out the weaker ones. In some cases, learners might have more knowledge than the instructors in the technical field as they explore, browse, and discuss more current issues.
E-learning offers enormous potential benefits for teaching and learning. It provides opportunities for collaboration of learning beyond the classroom. There are still some challenges to overcome. In our country, there are students who lack reliable internet access or struggle to participate in distance learning. Not only the students, but sometimes educators also face difficulties when introduced with new gadgets and applications. The thought of mastering many apps, gadgets, and programmes in addition to their regular lesson plans will probably make the academic mentors feel overwhelmed.

While young learners are more accustomed to social networking sites, online multimedia resources, and personal blogs; the elderly people, on the other hand, might face trouble handling new applications and websites. Fortunately, the positive side to E-learning is more extensive than the negative side. If an educator faces trouble managing a new app for giving academic instructions, and if there is no way of joining technical workshops and seminars instantly, he/she might ask to one of his/her smart learners to help out, which is very normal in this kind of crisis. In fact, learners feel an air of value and confidence when these tasks are given to them. In addition, online resources such as Google, YouTube are always there to watch new tutorials about how to operate new applications for teaching and learning processes.

However, in this current situation being “technologically challenged” is no longer an excuse. Luckily, beyond the age barrier, educators all over the world are adopting themselves with new teaching techniques and methods, and the learners are getting accustomed to the digital learning process in a rapid way.

After all, during any kind of global crisis, it is the duty of the educators to create opportunities for their students, help them to learn, cultivate compassion and increase resilience to build a safer, smarter, and caring community.
