The country slice of the recently-endorsed FIFA grant will be distributed among all stakeholders here and used in different sectors as deemed necessary.

Abdus Salam Murshedi, the vice-president of the country’s football regulatory authority Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), came up with the revealing information while talking to The Independent on Sunday.

The council of the world football’s governing body FIFA, meanwhile, has approved unanimously the COVID-19 relief fund of USD 1.5 billion in total already to assist its member countries, of which Bangladesh will receive more than Tk 80 million.

Murshedi, also a member of the Parliament, also talked in details about the BFF plan to use the sum while sharing views and information with this correspondent.

“Yes, I have learned about the FIFA grant and other financial facilities that will be provided to all member associations following the global spread of COVID-19 pandemic.”

He said, “Upon receiving money, we’ll have a board meeting. Actually, all our plans are usually discussed in the executive meeting and we take required steps upon approving the proposals.

But I can inform you that we’ll distribute the entire sum among our stakeholders.”

“In this respect,” he also said, “we’ll distribute the fund on priority basis i.e., clubs of the professional leagues, then Champions League, District Football Association (DFAs) will be among the recipients. Not only the clubs and organisations, we’ll also consider the troubled players, organisers and referees, who have been affected severely by the deadly coronavirus.”

Apart from the grant, he added, the member associations also have an opportunity to apply for interest-free loan amounting to the tune of 35 per cent of their audited annual revenue. For the sake of solidarity, a minimum loan of USD 500,000 and a maximum total of USD 5,000,000 million will be available.

The former national football star, who’s also one of the business icons of the country, said, “I think FIFA, as the apex body of the global football affairs, will offer support and we have to take the privilege as it will be interest-free. Hence, I think we should not ignore it.”

“But all decisions to this effect will be finalised during the board meeting as the EC is the highest authority of the BFF to take any decision whatsoever,” Salam stated.

However, the sources concerned said FIFA will have their every supervision to ensure effective oversight of the plan and there’ll have strict controls on the use of funds, audit requirements as well as clear loan repayment conditions.
