Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam on Sunday urged children, the elderly and sick people to refrain from visiting sacrificial animal markets ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.

The mayor made the call while addressing an online meeting over cattle market management and sacrificial waste removal.

The DNCC authorities had earlier announced setting up cattle markets - popularly known as Haat- in less populated areas under its territory maintaining proper health care.

Besides, the traders were urged to keep animals maintaining five feet distance from each others.

Regarding Haat management, Mayor Atiqul said the cattle market management amid the coronavirus pandemic is too tough without cooperation from the people.

"We’re arranging some big Haats, that usually sit inside Dhaka, on the outskirts of the city this year. Due to the decision, the city corporation is going to incur the highest ever losses,” he said, adding that the DNCC welcomed the loss for the sake of public health.

Mayor Atiqul requested the city dwellers to offer their Qurbani at the spots designated by the city corporation.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to remove wastes of sacrificed animals before 24 hours elapse,” he said.

All councilors and concerned officials of DNCC joined the online meeting.
