Bashundhara eye 3 foreign booters onboard, focus winning AFC Cup

Bangladeshi football fans are waiting with much fanfare as Bashundhara Kings are going to recruit three high profile foreign footballers with the club focusing only to win AFC Cup rather than hosting matches.

The media manager of the Bangladesh Champions Bashundhara Kings Ahmed Shaeek on Monday revealed their recruitment plan.

“As our target is to win the AFC Cup, so we are concentrating on team’s preparations rather than of taking the responsibility of hosting the group matches,” said Shaeek.

“We have an opportunity to win matches in this format of knockout phase as we will have to play only one match rather than two,” he added.

Bashundhara released last season’s foreign booters after all the domestic and international matches were postponed due to worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 and did not renew their contracts.

Shaeek said, “As we have released all our foreign players now we have option to include three overseas booters onboard and we received more than 20 profiles from Latin America and Europe to make make a short list of 10 within 10 to 12 days.”

Meanwhile, the remaining 10 out of 12 matches (Group E) of the AFC Cup will take place in one venue as per the AFC revised decision due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

The AFC recently announced that the rest of the 10 matches of the Group E will take place in a central venue for which any club can apply to be the host.

AFC has already invited applications from all four participant teams to bid to be the hosts.

The Group E comprised with the Bangladesh Champions Bashundhara Kings, Chennai City FC of India and two teams from Maldives- TC Sports Club and Maziya and Recreation Club.

After the scrutiny AFC will announce the name of the host country (team) by July 31st and will send letter to a competent bidder.

Bashundhra Kings, who played one match against TC Sports Club of Maldives and made a flying start with 5-0 victory, will not take part in the bidding, as Ahmed Shaeek told the Independent on Monday.

“Yes, we received a letter on Friday from AFC regarding the participation in the bidding process and the deadline but we have decided not be the host,” said Shaeek.

“We want to concentrate on our preparations on winning matches only following AFC guidelines. Now as hosting will a big burden along side making preperations for the competition, we have binned the idea of being host,” said the media manager.

“Two matches will be held in a day when the last match will take place at same time, we have only one venue in Dhaka so it will quite impossible for us to be the host,” he added.

“It will be an enormous job on the part of the host to conduct COVID-19 test on all the members of four team, to maintain proper isolation arrangement, ensure foolproof security and medication in case of infections,” said Shaeek.
