Flood, erosion hit Kurigram, Madaripur hard

Fresh flood and severe erosion have intensified the sufferings of people in Kurigram and Madaripur districts.

Low lying areas of many chars have been submerged in Kurigram as Brahmaputra and Dharla Rivers started to swell again thanks to heavy downpour and onrush of water coming from upstream.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 29cm above the danger point at Chilmari point while Dharla was above 45cm at Bridge point Sunday morning.

Low lying areas of over a hundred of chars in the district were inundated, causing sufferings to people - already devastated by earlier spells of the flood.

Over 3.5 lakh people are still marooned in the district with dire need of food and necessary assistance.

In Madaripur, a total of 55 dwellings, 4 shops and two schools went into the gorge of rivers in four Upazilas in the last three days.

According to the district administration, Kathalbari Government Primary School disappeared into the Padma River three days back.

Four shops and two dwellings were washed away by Arial Khan River in Kazirtek area of Sadar Upazila.

Kalkini Upazila turned out to be the worst-hit as a total of 50 dwellings and a government primary school went into the Arial Khan River during the period.

Besides, two houses eroded in Rajoir upazila.
