Salahuddin eyes BFF top post defying incumbency disadvantage

Kazi Mohammed Salahuddin, the existing President of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), is contesting for the post for the fourth consecutive time defying the incumbency disadvantage.

Salahuddin, one of the most popular celebrities of Bangladesh football was elected the President of the BFF in 2008 for the first time defeating his then opponent, late Major General (retd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury. In 2012, he was elected unopposed thereby becoming the President for the second time and completed hat-trick to retain the position for the third consecutive time defeating businessman Kamrul Ashraf Khan Poton in 2016.

Salahuddin when declared his candidature for the fourth time looked to face huge challenges from the prominent merchant of Chattogram Tarafdar Ruhul Amin and former national star Badal Roy would be contenders for the post.
But both Badal Roy and Tarafdar withdrew from contesting for the post and provided walkover, another former national star Shafiqul Islam Manik remained as the sole competitor of Salahuddin.

However, Salahuddin in an exclusive interview with The Independent on Tuesday said that he believes that the councilors will support him considering his work of last 12 years for the development of football and just for bringing the country’s football into light from darkness.

About his opponent, he did not underestimate or overestimate – “When contesting in an election, I always consider opponents as strong as well as weak whoever talking whatever against me, but I think voters will consider my last 12 years works.”
“If you look back just before I took over the charge in 2008, there was almost no football.

Players used to demonstrate to play league and other competitions. They even also show protest in front of this football Bhaban.”

“I had to struggle much to bring the football in a position, to start the league and stage different competitions and maintaining the continuity with the building of a professional framework simultaneously step by step.”

About some disparages from some quarters, Salahuddin said, “You can talk much from outside, because you are not working. It is easy to criticize but tough to work. I did so many works out of my federation duty.”

“I am giving you interview not for my campaigning, I am talking as the BFF president,” said the living legend of Bangladesh football.
About one of the important topics in the manifesto of his panel of setting up a four-storied building of BFF with the four-star hotel facilities including a modern gymnasium, Salahuddin said, “If I will be elected then hopefully it will take one and a half year. Everything becomes slower due to coronavirus outbreak.”

Salahuddin is also positive with some of the new candidates of his panel, as he said, “In fact it’s not always true that only experienced persons can work better than newcomers, track record of one is important.” You are here for a long time but have no activities, so these kinds of experiences are meaningless.”

“So I think there will be no problem to go forward with newcomers, no matter whether you are new or old but commitments and your devotion to duty are important,” Salahuddin evaluated the members contesting for different posts under his panel.
