Age group booters finally get to field after 7-month hiatus

The age group players of women national team, after a long seven-month hiatus following the COVID-19 pandemic, finally got to the field Wednesday when they joined the national camp ahead of scheduled international assignment.

A total of 33 players joined the camp ahead of the AFC Under-20 and Under-17 qualifying round matches scheduled for March 13-21 and April 3-11 respectively.

All women players were on leave when football’s governing body Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced the vacation right after the Ministry for Youth and Sports announced postponement of all sports activities across the country in mid-March after global spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Entire sports arena, in fact the whole nation, was also forced to stay at home and lead almost an imprisoned life. Unlike others, it was very much painful for the players, who used to spend hours of their daily routine on playground.

As different countries across the world resumed their sports activities, including a few international competitions like the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying round and the AFC also holding some of their competitions, the local players too found to have a great relief at long last.

Bangladesh women teams (U-17 and U-20), following the permission of the concerned ministry and the announcement of the AFC, accordingly started their practice sessions.

Head coach of the women team Golam Rabbani Chhoton while talking to The Independent on Wednesday said in detail about the fitness and the teams’ condition ahead of the AFC competitions.

“It is really more than tough for one to remain fit being out of any sports activities for seven months although they were under our monitoring and followed some guidelines.”

“Although we had regular contact and instructions to stay fit, it’s still difficult as some of the players had no playground to follow some outdoor activities.

But now we have about five months in hand to run for the competition.”

“We started the fitness training from Sunday and had only four days. Usually it takes six weeks to regain the fitness, but the way we are working and the girls staying attentive, they’ll hopefully be back in good shape,” Chhoton detailed about their fitness level and how he is putting in his efforts.

“In fact,” he said, “we tested 63 players for COVID-19 and inshallah all were found COVID-negative. But we called in 33 players due to safety measure. Though we have option for 18-23 players in a squad according to the AFC regulations, we called in 18 players for Under-18 and 15 players for U-20 due to the pandemic.”

The long serving women national team head coach concluded saying, “We also have an advantage to include any of U-17 players in the U-20 squad. In that case, if we have any outstanding performer among the junior booters, we can take the privilege of inclusion anew.”
