Players, coaches ecstatic as countdown for football fiesta begins

The wait is finally over! The long-awaited countdown for competitive football matches to begin in and across the country is now very much on with the game-time barely two weeks away after an unsolicited long layoff stretching eight months on the trot following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The national footballers have already begun their full-fledged practice sessions amid great enthusiasm since early of the week ahead of a couple of FIFA friendly matches with almost all the players joining the camp.

When national football’s governing body Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) confirmed last week two FIFA friendly matches scheduled for November 13 and 17, the players, coaches, organisers as well as fans and concerned quarter have been waiting anxiously since then for the day when international matches will kick off.

As national football team’s training camp has already been underway since earlier of this week, almost all the players of the preliminary squad joined the camp. Head coach Jamie Day from England and national captain Jamal Bhuiyan from Denmark landed in Dhaka Thursday while another national booter Tarik Kazi from Finland arrived Wednesday to join the camp.

All in all, a happy ambience is prevailing in the entire football arena as is reflected in body language of the players and staffers alike.

Such was the sigh of relief-turned positive vibe that those joining the training sessions couldn’t hide their expression of joy while talking to and taking part in the sessions at the Bir Sreshtha Mustafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur.

Apart from the players, however, Masud Pervej Kaisar, the deputy of head coach, looked joyous too when he was conducting the training session in absence of his English coach.

While talking to The Independent right after the training session on Wednesday, he said, “I’m really happy having the opportunity to return to the field and it is very much satisfactory that boys are not out of reach to regain their fitness.”
“In the first week of training, what I’ve seen is that the conditions are tolerable but the second and third weeks will be very much significant and will bring out the real picture of their fitness as to who could reach the optimum level,” he said about the condition of the players he oversaw in the first week.

A former national booter, Masud Pervej also said these sessions are also good options for the players to realise their own condition, “Through these practice sessions players would be able to justify their own fitness level, understand what they needed to do to get back their real shape and it would be easier for the coach to work along the way. It’s good to see that players are very much serious and hard working.”

But, he noted, “we’re very much excited. It’s actually like a sort of festivity all around and it would increase further upon coach Jamie Day and captain Jamal Bhuiyan’s joining.”
