Sylhet power supply restored after 55 hrs

UNB, Sylhet
Sylhet power supply restored after 55 hrs

Power supply to all regions of Sylhet was restored on Thursday evening after disruption of more than two days.

Electricity supply partially resumed in some places in Sylhet on Wednesday evening after a 31-hour blackout caused by a fire at Kumargaon Power Plant around 11am on Tuesday.

Power Development Board (PDB) chief of Sylhet Engineer Mokammel Hossain said the power station has been fixed. “Now, all areas of Sylhet are getting electricity,” he said.

Besides, PDB Assistant Director Jewel Rana said power supply was fully restored experimentally at 6:30pm.

“The power station has been repaired temporarily but supply will be disrupted if any repair work is required later,” he said.

The disruption in the power supply had hit about 450,000 consumers of the areas hard, Power Division officials said earlier.

Residents of Jallarpar, Mirzajangal, Dariapara, Lamabazar, Rikabibazar, Dakkhin Surma, suburbs area and different upazilas remained without power till Thursday afternoon.

Power Division officials had said they have been able to restore power supply to some important areas of the city through a rationing system.

Besides, people in many areas struggled for lack of water and there have been announcements from local mosques about the water crisis during every prayer time.

People struggled to keep their cellphones operational while some unscrupulous businessmen have raised the prices of candles taking advantage of the situation.

Although the fire service managed to put the fire at Kumargaon plant, its two transformers and a control panel were damaged, leaving the entire Sylhet district and parts of its adjoining areas without power.

A four-member probe body, headed by the executive engineer of Sylhet Palli Bidyut Development and Distribution division-2, has been formed to look into the matter.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
