Abahani groans in agony

Abahani groans in agony

Following the ignominy in the season’s opener Federation Cup, six times Bangladesh Premier League champions Abahani Limited becomes hungry to regain the honours, as they could not win either the Fed Cup or the League title in the last two seasons.

The traditional Sky-Blue will start their battle to reclaim the League Championship by taking on the Bangladesh Police Sports Club on today (Thursday).

Abahani, turned almost indomitable when they won the Professional Football League title for the sixth out of the ten editions commenced on the 2007-08 season but the men in Sky-Blue lost the title to the newcomer Bashundhara Kings who emerged as the new powerhouse in country’s football.

The 2019-20 season was postponed after the sixth round due to Covid-19 pandemic but this time Abahani will begin their campaign from today with the aim to recoup the championship.

Targeting to regain the title Abahani set off with bitter experiences after being eliminated from the semifinal stage of the season’s inaugural tournament Federation Cup conceding defeat to their main rival Bashundhara Kings.

But the Abahani Limited manager Satyajit Das Rupu when talking to the Independent on Tuesday expressed his expectation to regain the title as he told that the competition in the league will be different.

“You know Abahani always form the team to be the champion. This time as well we are looking for the same”, Rupu added.

“Yes, we had some ideas about different teams in the Federation Cup but the league will be different ball game as it is a long run competition and there are issues of concentration, going forward match by match, players’ fitness etc.

So, you can’t make perfect judgment on any team with the performances of some previous (3/4) matches. The approach in the tournament is always different, if any team can remain on the pitch for two weeks continuously, would have a result. But the league is not a short version contest, you have to be cautious while playing every match. All the top level teams will fight for the championship and others will also try in accordance with their strength. But I don’t want to tag any team as small or big, every match is important to us” Rupu replied to a query.

Rupu looked very much annoyed with the elimination from the semifinal of the Federation cup and he was not also happy with some decisions of the referees.

“Everybody saw what happened in some matches including the semifinal and how we were victimized of the referees’ decisions. Some decisions threw us on back-foot but we had nothing to do. We have to play with our limitations and in order to succeed have to overcome all of our lacking,” Rupu expressed his concern with refereeing.

Rupu when talking about their newly recruited Brazilian duo told, “They are improving day by day but the way our local players committing bad tackles to Brazilians, it is the responsibility of the referees to protect them but they overlooked those fouls which is awful indeed.”

“But we will play with the aim to regain the title and that will be our only focus,” Rupu told about their ultimate goal.
