Tigers’ pace-packed extended squad for NZ tour within 2/3 days

Tigers’ pace-packed extended squad for NZ tour within 2/3 days

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will announce an extended Tigers’ squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand within the next 2/3 days following the mixed bag of results in the recently-concluded home series between Bangladesh and West Indies.

Bangladesh made an ODI series clean sweep, while the Caribbean side had the clean sweep in Tests that drew heavy flaks and criticism in and around the country following the performance of the players, the team as well as the management.

And hence, the BCB this time is a bit cautious about the formation of the Tigers’ squad as they want to name such a team, which has to play on the Kiwis’ tough conditions without ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

Shakib, the Bangladesh side’s vital cog, already took a leave from the board to stay beside his expecting wife Umme Ahmed Shishir as the country’s globe-trotting premier all-rounder is going to be a father for the third time after the couple was previously blessed with two successive daughters - Alaina Hasan Abri and Errum Hasan.

Even though the Bangladesh squad was expected to be named in the current week, the management took some more time to name and select the squad for the ensuing New Zealand tour, where they are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series and as many Twenty20 international matches.

One day is the pet format of the Tigers and they will start its mission in Tran-tasman nation with an ODI match. So they are trying to bring a well-balanced team combination keeping the main target and the overseas condition in mind.

Bangladesh is scheduled to tour New Zealand with a view to winning a couple of games across the formats, where pacers are getting top priority.

But everyone knows although the Tigers won the ODI series against West Indies with ease on home territory, it will not be so easy for them to win any match on New Zealand conditions without its mercurial all-rounder Shakib and the charismatic figure Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who is yet to retire from ODI cricket and vowed to continue his game. If the board considers him for the squad, he will travel with them. Is the team management thinking of Mashrafe for the tour?

However, BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon said he wants to hold a multi-phase discussion before announcing the Tigers squad for the New Zealand tour. It’s supposed that he will talk about the results of the last West Indies series and the arrangement of the next away series.

“I will sit with the senior-most players of the team. Shakib is not in the series. And so, I will talk with the rest of them,” he noted.

It’s learnt from the confidential sources that the BCB president, meanwhile, talked to the senior-most players like ODI Captain Tamim Iqbal, wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad in absence of Shakib.

The president, therefore, will sit with selectors Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Habibul Bashar Sumon and Head Coach Russell Domingo before holding talks with the selection panel, where cricket operations Chairman Akram Khan, its Vice-chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon and Naimur Rahman Durjoy were included.

Before the final settlement, all the cricketers will be vaccinated by the BCB on February 18. Tigers are supposed to fly for New Zealand on February 28, two and a half weeks before the main series.

After a compulsory quarantine in New Zealand, they are scheduled to hold a five-day grueling workout to make their habituation with the weather and conditions before stepping into the main games, which will open with the ODI matches.
