UN HR chief wants more space for civil society

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein yesterday laid emphasis on greater engagement in regards to the concerns about shrinking space for the civil society in Bangladesh and accusations of extrajudicial actions by the security forces. In the opening statement in the 38th session of the Human Rights Council and global update of human rights, Hussein lauded Bangladesh for granting commendable access to his office with regard to Rohingya crisis.

“Bangladesh has granted extensive and commendable access to the office (UNHCR) and all relevant human rights mechanisms with respect to the Rohingya refugee crisis,” said Hussein.

However, he said, “It has more than 10 outstanding requests for visits by mandate holders to assess the human rights situation in Bangladesh itself.”
