20-party to field single candidate in each city

STAFF REPORTER

The BNP-led 20-Party Alliance will field a single mayoral candidate each in the Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations polls slated for July 26. The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance partners at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office yesterday, with BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the chair.

The BNP-led alliance, in its next meeting on June 27, will finalise the names of the alliance candidates for the mayoral posts in the three city polls, said an alliance leader.

Some alliance partners, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, wanted to field their own mayoral candidates in the three civic polls, but the alliance leaders have eventually reached a consensus to finalise lone candidate for each of these polls, said the leader.

Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan, secretary general of Bangladesh NAP, said the meeting expressed concerns over BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s deteriorating health condition and demanded proper treatment for her at the United Hospital.

The alliance leaders emphasised the need to gradually strengthen the ongoing movement to force the government to accept the demand for holding the next general polls under a neutral government.

Meanwhile, a total of 16 BNP aspirants yesterday collected nomination forms from the party’s central office in the hope of being nominated as the party’s mayoral candidate in the forthcoming elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations.

Of them, only one nomination paper was collected for the mayoral post of the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC). BNP organising secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu collected the nomination paper on behalf of the incumbent RCC mayor, Mosaddek Hossain Bulu.

The highest number of nine nomination papers were collected for the Barisal City Corporation (BCC), followed by six for the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), said BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu. Incumbent Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Sylhet city BNP president Nasim Hossain, senior vice-president Abdul Quaiyum Jalali Ponki, Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi, Badruzzaman Selim and Salahuddin Rimon collected nomination forms for the SCC mayoral post.

Ebadul Haque Chand, president of the Barisal south district unit of the BNP, incumbent SCC mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal, and party leaders Ziauddin Sikder, Abul Kalam Shahin, Bilkis Zahan Shirin, Abu Naser Mohammed Rahmatullah, Afroja KHanom Nasrin, Ali Haider Babul and advocate Parvej Akand Biplob collected nomination forms for the BCC mayoral ticket.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi handed over the nomination forms to the party aspirants, who bought them for Tk 10,000 each.  The aspirants will have to pay another Tk 25,000 each while submitting the forms.
