Fahima demolishes UAE
with a unique hat-trick

Leg spinner Fahima Khatun as the first Bangladesh woman cricketer slammed a coveted hat-trick that marshalled Bangladesh to script an inclusive eight-wicket victory over United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the low-scoring Group A fixture in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier at the Kampong Cricket Club, Utrecht, Netherlands on Tuesday night.

This was the third successive victory for Bangladesh, the feat that burst them into the semi-finals, in where they will fight against the Group-B runners-up Scotland at the VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen at 8pm today.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) fell into the tight bowling of the Bangladesh bowlers after being sent to bat first on Utrecht surface and shot out for a paltry 39 in 16.2 overs. Opener Chamani Seneviratna, who played Test for Sri Lanka and later assumed UAE citizenship, was the first victim having trapped run out by Rumana Ahmed in the seventh over.

Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun brought in leg-spinner Fahima Khantun in the ninth over to hasten the fall of wickets.

But Fahima remained wicketless in her first over attempt though she conceded only two runs.

The leg-spinner therefore picked up his first wicket by getting rid of Nisha Ali in her second over.

Fahima stormed into the record book in the next over when she removed Udeni Dona, Esha Oza and Kavisha Egodage in the last three consecutive deliveries of her third over to complete her first-ever T20 hattrick as the Bangladesh.

Overall, Fahima Khatun is the second Bangladesh woman’s cricketer to claim a hat-trick in international match after Rumana Ahmed, who earned the feat in one-day international against Ireland in 2016.

The 25-year-old legspinner gave away just eight runs to take her four-wicket haul that scooped her player of the match award. She was aided by Nahida Akhter and Rumana Ahmed, the duo who grabbed two wickets apiece for the Tigress.

Esha Oza was the only batter whose score was a double-figure mark (18). Among the single digit-holders, five batters got out for naught.

In reply, Bangladesh eves’ comfortably run down the target with eight wickets and 79 balls to spare. Nigar Sultana top-scored for Bangladesh with not out 21. Sanjida Islam made 15, while Ayesha Rahman Suktara bashed two for the winners.

The finalists of the Qualifier will barge into the ICC Women’s World T20 which will be played in West Indies in November this year with the participation of the 10 teams. The other eight teams including Australia, England, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, who have got direct access owing to their better rankings in ICC.
