Justice is done!

Justice is done!

The August 21 grenade attack had been a scar on the conscience of this nation for too long. For many, whether they are actively engaged in politics or not, the attack was aimed at snubbing out the voices of an opposition party, using the most barbaric of methods.

Fourteen years later, the verdict has been given and there is an overwhelming feeling across the country that justice has been served.

Politics aside, on Aug 21, 2004, civilians, including women, were killed when military grade grenades were hurled into an Awami League political rally. While the nation was stunned by such savagery, bodies with shrapnel wounds littered the roads. Those horrific scenes are etched in the collective memory of this country. It was a day when the democratic foundations of Bangladesh received a massive jolt.

Unfortunately, the long trail of subterfuge and intrigue following the attack is nothing but utterly reprehensible. Following such an event, the immediate task would have been to give full priority to the investigation and swift punishment, which did not happen. Evidence, scrupulously evaluated much later, shows that instead of arresting the likely suspects, a scapegoat was found and implicated; the travesty took a turn for the ridiculous when it was clear that police security on that day and, especially prior to the disaster, was unusually low. There have been instances when high ups also made flippant remarks about the tragedy.

All these indicate to a premeditated conspiracy involving the state apparatus of the time. While the probe report was submitted, the case was diverted with red herrings, and, reportedly, many incriminating evidence was summarily destroyed. It’s only natural to believe that this was done to cover clues, which may have led to the actual masterminds.

Be that as it may, despite these vile efforts to tamper with the evidence, there was plenty which remained and close scrutiny of these suggest that foul play of the highest order was involved. As the punishment is handed out, the actual events leading up to the attack emerge, showing also a militant link which wanted to wipe out the senior leadership of the then opposition party.

Now it power, the AL’s determination to eradicate all forms of radicalism is completely justified because unless uprooted, these forces will strike again at the heart of a civilised society. The conclusion of the case, though belated, proves one other thing: crime of such enormity cannot be wiped out and swept under the carpet because there is a word beyond all human capability to manipulate, called karma.
