Govt to launch awareness campaign on LPG use

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The government will launch an awareness campaign to prevent gas blasts during the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The decision was taken at a meeting held at the Secretariat yesterday.

Nasrul Hamid, the state minister for power and energy, presided over the meeting. Representatives of the LPG Owners’ Association and officials of 12 energy companies were present.

Sources said officials of the Energy Division apprised the meeting that some recent accidents had injured more than 10. “With the help of some case studies, we see that users are not handling LPG bottles properly. They don’t have any information about how to handle the bottles. This causes mishaps,” they reported.

The minister said as the economy and sector are booming, people are interested in using LPG. “But if the users don’t know how to use them properly, accidents will happen in the future as well,” he observed.

The meeting then decided to launch an awareness campaign, jointly organised by the Energy Division and the LPG Owners’ Association.

At the meeting, Hamid pointed out to the owners that in recent times, LPG prices have dropped to USD 100 per tonne. “But we don’t see any impact on the local market. The people of the country are complaining to us about the price.”

In their reply, the LPG association’s leaders said, “We lost billions of takas earlier so we need to recover the losses. But in future, if the international market is stable, we will cut LPG prices.”
