BNP poll convoys come under attack in places

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Election campaigns of BNP candidate Afroza Abbas of Dhaka-9 and Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed Siddiq of Gazipur-1 came under attack during electioneering in their constituencies concerned yesterday.

In the capital’s Kamalapur and Madartek area Afroza and her supporters were reportedly attacked twice by ruling party men, leaving five people injured while at Shafipur Bazar under Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur Tanvir was attacked, what BNP leaders claimed, by some Juba League activists.

UNB adds: A group of ruling party activists, led by local Awami League leader Chittaranjan Das and Chhatra League leader Shahriar, equipped with rods and sticks attacked the motorcade of Afroza at Madartek around 12pm, said her media coordinator Nahid Nazrul. He said the Awami League workers damaged her vehicle and assaulted her driver Abdur Rashid.

They also beat up four BNP activists as they tried to rescue Rashid, Nahid added.

He said Rashid was admitted to Al-Baraka Hospital in a critical condition.

Earlier, Nahid said the same group attacked Afroza Abba and her followers near Kamalapur Boys' High School around 10:00am when they were carrying out election campaign there. He claimed the attackers also assaulted some female activists of Afroza.

Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, husband of Afroza, warned that he has the strength to put up resistance against any attack on him.

Talking to reporters while conducting campaign in Motijheel area, the BNP candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming election said, "I've heard around 100 Awami League cadres with sticks are waiting for me to be at Paribagh. I would like to tell BNP activists that I've the strength to resist any such attack."

Abbas said his wife’s election campaign came under repeated attacks since morning. “She didn’t engage in fight. I also don’t want to lock into any clash as we’re on election campaign to woo and inspire voters.”

The BNP leader also said the police are not taking any step to resist the attackers as they are only playing the role of silent spectators.

Meanwhile, in Gazipur Tanvir was addressing a rally at around 11:00am, some Jubo League men riding 50 motorcycles appeared in the meeting venue chanting ‘Joy Bangla’, claimed the BNP leaders.

When the rally reached a market adjacent to Dhaka-Tangail Highway, a gang of youths attacked the rally and barred Tanvir from continuing with the rally.

Later, the BNP leader, along with his followers, left the place and went to Kaliakoir upazila sadar.

Our correspondent, Chandpur adds: Maiden motorcade of BNP candidate for Chandpur-1 constituency Mosharraf Hossain came under attack near Sachar Bazar at Kochua Upazila at around 4:00pm yesterday.

It left at least ten people injured including Mosharraf Hossain, said the police.

The locals said, Mosharraf’s motorcade of around 12 vehicles was going to offer munajat at the graveyard of Uzani Pir Saheb.

When the procession reached the bazaar, the attackers vandalised five vehicles with sticks and brickbats, said the party sources and witnesses. Mosharraf himself among ten BNP men were injured.

He along with his supporters and activists scrapped election campaign and the injured were rushed to different hospitals in the Gouripur Upazila of Cumilla.

Contacted, OC  Kochua Police Station  Ataur Rahman   told this correspondent , ‘ Police force rushed to the spot  and   the situation is now calm.

Additional police forces were deployed to avert further clash but none has complained to me regarding this attack, he added.

Soon after the attack, a BNP protest procession was brought out at Sachar Bazar where party leaders vehemently protested at the assault led by local Jubo League leaders Robiullah and Dalim and BCL leaders Salahuddin Sarker and Saddam.
