Alleged assault on teacher by cops

Our Correspondent, Mymensingh

A college teacher was allegedly assaulted by policemen at the city's Zila School intersection yesterday morning.

The victim, Sheikh Mohammad Shariful Islam, is an assistant professor of the English department at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam College.

Shariful was on his way to the college in the morning. When his car reached the Zila School intersection around 9.45am, a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit the bumper of the car while trying to overtake from behind.

While an altercation between the drivers began, an on-duty traffic constable reached the spot and pulled up the car driver for his alleged wrongdoing.

As the teacher tried to intervene, the constable got into an argument with him. At one stage, the constable caught him by the collar and punched him several times, Shariful alleged.

Some policemen, too, joined the fracas and tore off his shirt and trousers and took him to the Police Outpost No-2, the teacher alleged.

On receiving news, other teachers of the college rushed to the police station. Shariful was given first aid at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Soon after the incident, a group of students brought out a procession in protest against the incident. They went to the Kotwali police station, demanding the arrest of Shariful's attackers.

Some 20 students were injured when police tried to drive them away and fired rubber bullets, said Mofizun Nur Khoka, a senior teacher of the college.

Four of them are now undergoing treatment at the MMCH, while six others had been given first aid, he added.

However, additional police superintendent of Mymensingh (Sadar Circle), Md Al Amin, said the teacher had got into an altercation with the constable and punched him in the face.

The agitated students attacked the police Station with bricks and sticks. They smashed windowpanes and vandalised some motor bikes, he claimed.

Police fired four rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the agitated students, said Amin. Four policemen, injured during the clash, were also admitted to MMCH, he added.

On getting information, Mymensingh deputy commissioner Dr Subhas Chandra Biswas and Mymensingh police superintendent Shah Abid Hossain rushed to the college. They also met with the injured students and policemen at MMCH.
