Unipay2u top bosses jailed for 12 years

A Dhaka Court yesterday sentenced six people, including the chairman and managing director of Unipay2u, to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for laundering Tk. 1,351 crore through a multi-level marketing scam.

The court also fined eahc of them Tk.

272 crore. Dhaka special court-3 judge Abu Syed Dilzar Hossain yesterday handed down the verdict after disposing of the case filed in this connection.

The convicts are Unipay2u managing director Muntasir Hossain, chairman Md Shahiduzzaman Shahid, executive director Masudur Rahman, general manager AM Jamshed Rahman, adviser Monjurul Ehsan Chowdhury and director HM Arshad Ullah. Muntasir, Arshad Ullah and Jamshed are in jail, while others are on the run.

In its verdict, the court has said the allegation brought against the accused under the Money Laundering Act has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

On January 25, 2011, Md Towfiqul, then assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), filed a case with Shahbag police station against the officials of Unipay2u, a so-called multilevel marketing company, for laundering Tk 42,014,296,633 from different banks.

The first investigation report (FIR) stated that the accused had lured people into investing in gold pledging higher profit against the purchase.

Charges were framed against them on June 22, 2011, which was followed by indictment on July 6, 2015. The trial proceedings recorded testimonials of 23 witnesses.
