900-metre visible now as 7th span installed

The seventh span (super structure) of the much-awaited Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) was installed yesterday, making 900 metres of the bridge visible. The 150-metre-long span, which weighs 3,140 tonnes, was placed on pillars 36 and 37 at the Zajira point in Shariatpur around 10am.

This is the seventh span of the Padma Bridge overall and sixth span at Jajira point.

It was put in place six months after the installation of the fifth span. Earlier, the first span of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge was laid on Pillars 37 and 38 on September 30,

2017, while the second one was installed on  Pillars 38–39 on January 28, 2018. The third span of the bridge was placed on Pillars 39–40 on March 11, 2018, while the fourth was laid on Pillars 40–41 on May 13. The fifth span was installed on Pillars 41–42 on June 29.

Md Shafiqul Islam, project director of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project, said the span had been placed on a temporary bearing. After welding, the span will be paired with the fifth span. The sixth span has been successfully installed without any complexity.

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said the project’s total progress so far has been 63 per cent, while 73 per cent work of the main bridge has been completed. The construction works of 16 pillars out of 42 have been completed. Besides, the work related to 15 pillars is in progress.

The construction of the country’s largest bridge began in December 2015. The 6.15-km bridge will have a total of 41 spans, each of which is 150 metres in length.

According to the engineers concerned, a total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 concrete pillars. Besides, 17 spans are ready to be fixed, while the work of constructing 18 more is under way.

After its completion, the PMB will directly connect 21 southern districts with Dhaka through road and railways.

In 2012, the World Bank (WB) had withdrawn its USD 1.2 billion loan following allegations of corruption. The government then took the initiative to build the bridge with its own funds.

On October 14, 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled the name plaque of Padma Bridge Toll Plaza at the Mawa end.
