ACC seizes SUV meant for jt secy, used by ex-PDB typist for 10yrs

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has retrieved a car, Dhaka Metro Gha-11-2827, supposed to be used by a person of the rank of joint secretary. A grade three staff of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) used it for long.

Alauddin Mia, a retired steno-typist of the BPDB, used the car for over ten years. Being the former secretary general of the Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) of the BPDB, Alauddin used his muscle power to keep the Pajero car for his and his family's use. The ACC yesterday (Monday) finally retrieved the car from Alauddin’s clutch. Even after retirement from the BPDB, he had been using the car. A team of the ACC retrieved the car from the Motijheel area of the capital. Mohammad Munir

Chowdhury, ACC director of enforcement, told a press conference yesterday that around Tk. 1 crore was spent on the sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the last ten years.

The car used to get an allocation of 15 litres of diesel every day. So, last year around Tk. 35 lakh was spent on fuel alone. Another Tk. 37 lakh was spent as salary of the designated driver for the car. Munir said the car was retrieved on a specific complaint. When it was retrieved, there was no one but the driver. He was released after making a recorded statement.

Munir told The Independent that there are a lot of reasons for filing a case on this incident. “We will conduct further investigations. After completing the investigation, we will hand over the car to the BPDB,” he said.
