BJP makes inroads into West Bengal

NDTV, Kolkata

With all counting trends in, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making inroads into West Bengal with leads in 18 seats against 22 seats that are being led by Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state where the two parties are locked in a fierce fight . The Congress is ahead in two seats while the leftists are yet to post any lead as of 8:40pm.

In 2014, TMC won 34 seats, the Congress four, the Left and the BJP two each.

Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday congratulated winners in her state As the BJP was headed for a landslide victory and a second term riding on a stunning performance in states like Bengal, adds NDTV.
"Congratulations to the winners. But all losers are not losers," said Mamata.
Mamata Banerjee fought hard to preserve her territory as the BJP campaigned aggressively in 42-seat Bengal. We have to do a complete review and then we will share our views with you all. Let the counting process be completed fully and the VVPATs matched," the Bengal Chief Minister tweeted.
The TMC earlier had 34 seats and the BJP, only two. The Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front had 4 and 2 seats. The EC on Wednesday turned down the demand of 22 Opposition parties to count the VVPAT slips first at randomly selected five polling booths.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the ECI to increase random matching of EVM results with paper trail machine slips from one polling station per assembly seat to five.
The EC said the VVPAT verification will be done after counting of votes and not before. On Tuesday, just two days ahead of
counting of votes, 22 opposition parties, including TMC, demanded that VVPAT slips at randomly selected five polling booths should be counted first, and if any discrepancy occurs, then VVPAT slips should be tallied for the entire assembly segments.
