Four ‘drug peddlers’ killed in ‘gunfights’

Four suspected drug peddlers were killed in reported ‘gunfights’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in Teknaf upazila and Cumilla yesterday. In Teknaf, RAB-15 Teknaf camp commander Lieutenant Md Mirza Shahed Mahtab confirmed about the development.

The men were identified as Dil Mohammad, 42, son of Sultan, and Rashedul Islam, 24, son of Mohammad Yunus, and Shahidul Islam, 40, son of Abul Kashem.

Dil and Rashedul were residents of Cox's Bazar while Shahidul hailed from Chattogram. Lt Mahtab said RAB also recovered 40,000 pieces of contraband yaba pills, four light guns, and 21 bullets from Whitekong after the gunfight. In Cumilla, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Mathurapur in Sadar Dakshin upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abul Hashem, 52, son of Minnat Ali of Birahimpur village of the upazila. BGB-10 Commander Lt Col Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin said a team was conducting an anti-drug raid in the area when drug peddlers opened fire on them, leading to a gunfight.

One of drug peddlers was sustained gunshot wounds during the skirmish. The BGB members took him to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The BGB team also recovered 18,350 pieces of yaba pills from the spot.
