Ordeal of a poor parent

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jhenidah
Ordeal of a poor parent

Abject poverty has forced a poor parent to leave her ailing boy with his grandparent’s house at Kashimpur in Kaliganj upazila.

Now, the grandparents are in trouble as they also do not have the wherewithal to treat the boy. The grandparents are now going from door to door to seek alms for their grandson’s treatment.

Manjura Begum, wife of a day labourer Liakat Ali of Kashimpur village, said their daughter, Ratna Khatun, was married to another day labourer, Al Amin, about five years back.

Ratna gave birth to her a boy, Abir, after a year of her marriage.

When Abir was four, he was down with a high fever and severe muscle spasm. The fever could not be controlled and the child kept losing weight. Abir is now nothing but only skin and bones.

Resident medical officer of Jhenidah Sadar hospital, Dr Apurba Kumar Saha, said they could not find out why the boy lost so much weight in such a short time. “We don’t have the facility for thorough examining him. Only hospitals in Dhaka and any other well-equipped hospital can provide that.”
