Sohel Taj seeks PM’s help to trace nephew

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Former state minister for home affairs, Sohel Taj, yesterday sought Prime Minister Seikh Hasina’s intervention in finding his cousin’s son who has been abducted. Sohel claimed that the family knew who the abductors were and urged them to release his nephew safely.

Naming state intelligence agencies and law and order forces, Sohel claimed that his nephew had been receiving threats since February.

Eight days after abduction of Sayed Iftekhar Alam, alias Sourav, his mother and Sohel addressed a press conference at the Sagor-Runi Auditorium in Dhaka Reporter’s Unity (DRU) and made the pleas.

Sourav, a student of media and communication at the Independent University Bangladesh, was picked by unidentified persons from the front of Afmi Plaza in Chattogram city around 7:00pm on June 9.

This is stated in the complaint lodged by Sourav’s father, Idris Alam, with Panchlaish police station on June 10.

In the press conference, Sohel said: “We are citizens of Bangladesh. We don't expect a citizen to be kidnapped. It seems the family identity does not matter. Such incidents are not desirable. Law enforcement agencies are working. Hopefully, we’ll get back Sourav soon.”

In a Facebook status posted on Friday night, the former state minister alleged that his cousin’s son was abducted from the Chittagong Medical College Hospital area on June 9. He requested those who had kidnapped Sourav to return him to the family. "Otherwise, your identity will be revealed in public. We know who are behind the incident.”

Saiyada Yeasmin Arjuman, Sourav’s mother, alleged that one Saleh Azad Chowdhury was behind her son’s abduction due to a personal feud.
