Zia Charitable Trust graft case

Documents reach HC

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) yesterday received the documents of Zia Charitable Trust graft case from the lower court concerned. Talking to The Independent, Supreme Court’s special officer Barrister Saifur Rahman said that they have received the documents yesterday afternoon as the lower court concerned sent the relevant documents following the previous order of the HC, and they would take next moves following the rules.   Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman, a counsel for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, told The Independent that they would move to the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hasan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman in next week.

“We will mention the case before the HC by next week seeking bail for the BNP chief in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

We hope the HC will grant her bail in the case within very short time,” he added.  Earlier, on April 30, the same HC bench said it would consider Khaleda’s bail plea in Zia Charitable Trust graft case after getting case documents from lower court.

After admitting the BNP chairperson's appeal for hearing, the HC bench ordered the lower court concerned to forward the case documents within two months. The BNP chief filed the appeal with the HC, seeking the cancellation of the trial court verdict that had sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment in connection with the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

A special court in Dhaka, on Oct 29, 2018, found her guilty in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case—in absentia—and sentenced her to seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Tk 10 lakh, and given 6-month more jail term if she failed to pay the sum. On 8 August 2011, ACC filed the case against four people, including Khaleda Zia. Dhaka’s special court on Feb 8 also jailed her for five years in Trust corruption case.

She has been in jail since February 8 last year following a special court verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case that sentenced her to five years in jail.
