Govt and pvt sectors together should ensure quality food, say experts

Special Correspondent, Dhaka

Both government and the private sector should work together to ensure quality of food, experts of the concerned sectors have said. According to experts, those who are involved in food production, preservation, processing, supply and selling have to play a pivotal role to maintain hygiene and ensure quality of food.

The experts said this while addressing a roundtable on "Food for All: Challenge and Imperatives", organised by the Bangladesh Food Safety Foundation (BFSF), at the city’s Krishibid Institute yesterday (Thursday).

According to former agriculture ministry secretary Anwar Faruk the government should ensure that consumers get safe and pure food. “There is need for a food policy, including proper laws and rules. Government agencies should issue circulars from time to time to implement government instructions, so that people get safe and nutrient foods,” he said.

Both government and private organisations should follow international standards to ensure safe food and food ingredients, General Secretary of the Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan said.

He said, "Considering the health issue, the departments concerned would have to ensure safe food. It is needed to control the quality of food ingredients and safe food because of globalisation. It is impossible to ensure security without safe food.”

Former director general of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Hamidur Rahman  said the future generation would not be protected without pure food.

“The government is very concerned to ensure safe food for consumers. The BSTI is committed to ensuring healthy and pure food. We are continuously conducting mobile courts and testing food quality after collecting samples from the markets,” Moazzem Hossain said.
