Grading system restructuring on cards

The government is going to restructure the existing grading system of public exams and make it a unified one, to keep pace with local and international levels while pursuing higher education or seeking jobs based on results. Currently, the total marks of students is estimated under Grading Point Average (GPA)–5 in Primary Education Completion (PEC) and

equivalent, Junior School Certificate (JSC) and equivalent, Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams.

The authorities have taken a decision in principle that the GPA-5 will be changed to GPA-4 because such grading prevails in both public and private universities in the country and elsewhere in the world.

They have decided to reorganise the existing GPA-5 because students, different education boards and universities face problems when these gradings are made equivalent with the grading system of the tertiary level education while pursuing higher education.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, which is working as coordinator of all education boards, has already prepared a number of proposals for restructuring

the GPA-5, which will be placed before the ministry of education at a likely meeting on June 26 in presence of education minister Dipu Moni.

Under the current grading system in schools, which was introduced in 2001 by changing the division system of first class, second class and third class, there are seven levels of the letter grading system — A+, A, A-, B, C, D, F.

A+ is equivalent to grade point 5 under the class interval 80-100, A is equivalent to 4 under class interval 70-79, A- is equivalent to 3.5 under class interval 60-69, B is equivalent to 3 under class interval 50-59, C is equivalent to 2 under class interval 40-49, D is equivalent to 1 under class interval 33-39 and F is equivalent to 0 under class interval 0-32 which means fail.

The Dhaka board said the gap of the class interval 80-100 is 20 and below 80 marks the class interval is 10, where a change will come.

“We have made proposals that there will be two or more levels in the class interval from 80-100 to reduce the difference of marks. And below 80, the gap would be five instead of the current 10,” chairman of board of intermediate and secondary education, Dhaka, Prof M Ziaul Haque, told The Independent on Tuesday.

Board sources said there will be 13 levels of letter grading system - A, A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, D, D-, E, E- and F - under the proposed grading system.

A+ is equivalent to grade point 4 under the class interval 90-100, A+ is equivalent to 3.85 under class interval 80-89, A is equivalent to 3.75 under class interval 75-79, A- is equivalent to 3.50 under class interval 70-74, B+ is equivalent to 3.25 under class interval 65-69, B is equivalent to 3.00 under class interval 60-64 and B- is equivalent to 2.75 under class interval 55-59, C+ is equivalent to 2.50 under class interval 50-54, D is equivalent to 2.25 under class interval 45-49,

D- is equivalent to 2.00 under

class interval 40-44, E  is equivalent to 1.6 under class interval 35.39, E- is equivalent to 1.25 under class interval 33-34 and F is equivalent to 00 under class interval less than 30.

“We have made several proposals for it. Nothing is final yet. We will have a meeting with the education minister first. Later, we will hold meetings with other stakeholders to finalise it,” Prof M Ziaul Haque said.

“When restructuring of the existing grading system takes place, it will reduce the admission complexity. We will come to know the standard of students as the marks difference will be reduced. It will reduce pressure on students,” he added.

After introduction of the GPA in 2001, no steps have been taken to restructure it, Haque said. “Now a change will come and it is necessary to keep pace with both local and international levels in pursuing higher education and seeking jobs.”

Asked about any change in pass marks, he said, “There is no such proposal right now. The existing pass marks will prevail.”

Dhaka board sources said they had held one meeting with the education minister recently and the second meeting is likely to take place on June 26.

However, the board chairman said when the new GPA-4 system will be introduced, depends on when it will be finalised.

Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Prof. Farid Uddin Ahmed, told The Independent: “Restructuring of the grading system is necessary to bring similarity among all educational systems. It’s a good initiative. So far, we have some differences in the grading system between the lower level education and higher level education in the country. The education system should have unity and congruity for easing all processes in the educational system,” he added.
