Eleven days inside abduction from Chattogram, the law enforcers rescued the former state minister Sohel Taj’s nephew, Syed Iftekhar Alam Sourav from Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh.

He was rescued in the Batala Bazar area of the upazila around 5:30am yesterday. Mizanur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tarakanda police station, said the criminals left Sourav, a film-maker by profession, in front of Jamil Auto Rice Mill.

After getting information, police went to the spot and rescued him.

An unidentified car dropped Sourav in front of a

rice mill at Batala Bazar area of the upazila, he said.  The OC said that Sourav is doing well now. We handed him to his family after a routine interrogation and completing some legal procedures,” said the OC. He said Sourav was abducted by unidentified miscreants. Police are still looking into this issue and trying to identify them.

However, Sohel Taj has said his nephew Sourav is distressed and not in good condition. Sohel announced this to reporters at his residence and also on Facebook Live on his verified Facebook page around 11am yesterday.  He said that Sourav was found with his limbs tied, wearing only pants. The Mymensingh police provided some food after rescuing him.

“As he is extremely distressed, we don’t want to give him any mental pressure. Therefore, we are waiting for his return,” he said.

Earlier, at a press conference on Monday, Sohel Taj sought the prime minister’s intervention in hunting down his nephew who was allegedly picked up by plainclothes policemen over his relationship with a woman.

Earlier, on June 17, Sourav’s mother Anjuman said at a press conference that Sourav received a phone call in the afternoon of June 8. He was told to ready his credentials for a job opportunity. He was called again the next day and told to wait in front of Agora in Chattogram’s Mimi Super Market.

“Our son left with the necessary documents and his passport at 7pm but never came back. His mobile phone was switched off.”

Later, a general diary was filed with Panchlaish Police Station.

He had received threats of being picked up a few times before over his relationship with the businessman’s daughter; it was alleged in the media briefing.

The victim’s family also said that on May 16, 2019, Sourav was abducted for the first time from his temporary residence in the capital’s Banani, by a group who identified themselves as DGFI, and RAB personnel. He was returned to his residence the following day.
