Call for immediate formulation of right to food law

UNB, Dhaka

Speakers at dialogue on Sunday urged the government to formulate a law immediately to ensure people's right to food, saying such a law is essential for building a poverty-free society. “Enacting the right to food law is a demand of the time," said Mohsin Ali, general secretary of the Right to Food Movement, while addressing the function jointly organised by Right to Food Bangladesh and Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) at the ERF auditorium in the city.

He said Bangladesh should immediately enact the 'Right to Food Act' and implement it to ensure adequate amount of food and nutrition for the poor and extremely poor people.

Senior journalist and former ERF General Secretary Badiul Alam, Arshad Hossain Siddiqui, lobby and advocacy expert for South & Central Asia Region at a global non-governmental organisation ICCO Cooperation, and ERF General Secretary Rashidul Islam also spoke at the dialogue titled "Necessity to Enact a Food to Right Law and the Role of Media".

Citing data of the Planning Commission, Mohsin Ali said the poverty rate in Bangladesh is 21.8 per cent which means 3.55 crore of the country's 16.36 crore people are poor while the extreme poverty rate is 11.13 per cent meaning about 2 crore people are extremely poor. About 2.5 crore people are suffering from malnutrition, he said.
