‘BSF beats Bangladeshi to death’

UNB, Chuadanga

A Bangladeshi man was allegedly beaten to death by members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Thakurpur border of Damurhuda upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdullah Mondol, 46, son of Golam Rasul of Thakurpur village of the upazila.

Local Union Parishad member Saker Uddin said four Bangladeshi men crossed the border to bring cattle from India at dawn. BSF members of Maluapara camp chased them and caught Abdullah.

His body was later found at zero point of Thakurpur border.

Habibur Rahman, elder brother of Abdullah, alleged that BSF members had beaten his brother to death.

Sukumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Model Police Station, said they recovered the body around noon and sent it to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

“There were injury marks on the body,” he said, quoting the inquest report.

Chuadanga-6 Border Guard Bangladesh Director Sazzad Sarwar said they were investigating the death.

Three killed over land dispute

Three people were killed and two others injured in a clash over the ownership of a plot at Khathaldangi village in Iswarganj upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased were identified as Jahirul, Hasim Uddin and Azizul Haq of the village.

Hashim’s sons Khairul and Mazharul were injured.

Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Abdul Rashid and his cousin Hasim had been at loggerheads for a long time over the land dispute.

“Five people were injured when the two sides fought pitched battles at 9:30am,” Islam said. Locals took them to Iswarganj Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Jahirul dead. “The others were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Hasim and Azizul died while being taken there,” the OC said.

Khairul and Mazharul are being treated at MMCH.

BGB exchanges Eid greetings with BSF along Hili border

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) exchanged greetings with Border Security Force (BSF) men along Hili border here on Monday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

The border forces of the two neighbouring countries also exchanged sweetmeat and other gifts on the occasion.

Md Altaf Hossian, company commander of BGB Hili check-post, said they handed over nine packets of sweetmeat to BSF while BSF gave them seven packets of sweetmeat around 10:30am. Speaking on the occasion, BSF Hili camp company commander DS Sindh said, “Both BSF and BGB discharge the same responsibility. So, we always try to maintain amity and fraternity between us.”

Woman ‘murdered for dowry’

UNB, Satkhira

A housewife was allegedly killed by her husband for dowry at Sultanpur Palpara in the town on early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Dipika Hazra, wife of Animesh Pal in the area. Kalpona Hazra, the mother of the deceased, said her son-in-law called them around 3am and said Dipika had taken her own life.

“We rushed there and found my daughter hanging from the ceiling. She had several wounds on her body,” she added.

Kalpona alleged that her son-in-law used to ask for dowry since they got married last year.

“We’ve given him money on various occasions,” she added. Animesh could not be reached for comments.

Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge, Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said they recovered the body and sent it to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Body recovered in Munshiganj

UNB, Munshiganj

The body of a worker who went missing in the Dhaleswari River after two launches collided at Munshiganj Ghat in the district town on Sunday morning was recovered on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Sabbir Hossain, 15, son of Abul Kalam of Purbanpur village in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla. The Chandpur-bound launch Bogdadia-9 collided with Jamjam heading for the southern region around 10:30am on Sunday.
