BNP to draw attention of int'l community for Khaleda release

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD, Dhaka

The BNP will send letters to the international community soon to express its concern over the matter of release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her proper treatment, according to party insiders. BNP leaders allege that the former premier was jailed unfairly.

They claim that Khaleda is in ill health and cannot get release due to the government's interference in the legal arena. So, the party wants to expose 'the inhuman attitude of the government' by sending emissaries and letters to the international community, said a standing committee member.

“We will use all possible instruments to bring to light the matter of the release of our chairperson and her treatment. She is not being released due to the government's interference in the legal arena,” said standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

The party will brief foreign diplomats based in Dhaka and also send delegations to different countries. "We'll send delegations to the United Nations and the European Union to let them know how our chairperson is unfairly being kept in jail," he added.

Meanwhile, a high-powered sub-committee formed on Saturday is working out how the party will convey the message to the international community. The party has taken the initiative as part of its international endeavour, the party insiders noted.

The sub-committee is headed by BNP standing committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.

BNP policymakers said this initiative would help put pressure on the government in releasing the former premier and strengthen the party's relations with influential countries.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders at a meeting of the sub-committee yesterday at the chairperson’s political office in Gulshan discussed the options to brief the international community represented by their missions in Dhaka, to send emissaries to their respective countries and to send letters through the embassies of high commissions.

Earlier on Saturday, the BNP standing committee at a meeting had decided to focus on the international community to press for the release of Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda Zia has been serving her 17-year jail term since February 8 last year in two graft cases. The BNP started street agitation before Eid-ul-Azha and held public meetings in three divisional headquarters to free Khaleda Zia.

Party sources said they would again start street agitation from next month demanding Khaleda’s release .
