‘Ivy Rahman worked for women’s welfare’

UNB, Dhaka

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said former Mahila Awami League president Ivy Rahman worked for the welfare and emancipation of women throughout her life.

“If we analyse her works, we can see she (Ivy) worked for the emancipation and welfare of women throughout her life,” said the Speaker while addressing a discussion arranged marking the 15th death anniversary of Ivy Rahman, wife of late President Zillur Rahman.

The discussion was organised at the Ivy Rahman auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity in the city. Dr Shirin said Ivy also worked throughout her life for promoting women in politics.

“Alongside joining various movements and struggles, she did many constructive works so that women can move forward,” she said adding that Ivy will remain as an idol to women.

Noting that 24 AL leaders and activists, including Ivy Rahman, were killed in the August-21 grenade attack in 2004, the Speaker said it was carried out to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and make the nation leaderless. AL presidium members Matia Chowdhury and Sahara Khatun, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, among others, spoke at the discussion presided over by MA Karim.

BSS adds: The 15th death anniversary of Ivy Rahman,

former president of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League and wife of late President Zillur Rahman, was observed yestedray in a befitting manner.

To mark the day, different political and socio-cultural organisations, including Bangladesh Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and other likeminded organizations took elaborate programmes.

The programmes included placing wreaths and offering Fateha at her (Ivy) grave at Banani graveyard, arranging milad mahfil and special prayers and holding discussions in the capital and elsewhere across the country. Central leaders of Awami League and its associate bodies paid rich tributes to Ivy Rahman by placing wreaths at the Banani graveyard yesterday

morning. They also offered Fateha and doa seeking eternal peace of her departed soul.

AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was present, among other leaders.
