The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has interrogated former inspector general (prisons) Brig. Gen.

(retd) Syed Iftekhar Uddin to investigate allegations of irregularities and corruption that had taken place in Chattogram Central Jail. A two-member team, led by ACC director Muhammad Yusuf, questioned Iftekhar Uddin at the ACC headquarters yesterday. The other member of the team is assistant director Salahuddin Ahmed. This has been confirmed by ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

ACC sources said Syed Iftekhar Uddin was grilled in connection with the recovery of more than Tk. 80 lakh from the residence of Partha Gopal Banik, deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division.

Emerging from the ACC’s interrogation cell, Iftekhar Uddin told the media that the ACC sought his opinion over the various irregularities and corruptions that had taken place recently in Chattogram Central Jail. “Incidents of irregularities and corruption

have been taken place in my organisation. I can’t avoid the responsibility. It’s my administrative failure,” he said.

On July 28, the ACC had arrested Partha Gopal after it found Tk. 80 lakh at his Kalabagan residence.

Partha Gopal was arrested after his transfer to Sylhet for the Chattogram range. He came under the ACC net when a home ministry investigation found his involvement, along with 48 others, in graft.

The home ministry had launched the initial investigation to probe the irregularities of Sohel Rana Biswas, suspended jailer of Chattogram Central Jail.
