Chief of Naval Staff of Bangladesh Navy, Admiral Aurangzeb Chowdhury, has said that the entire nation needs to realise that the Bay of Bengal is our future. “The Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD) needs to strive to bring realistic and attractive research findings highlighting the significance of the sea for Bangladesh that would convince the political leaders, scholars, institutions and businessmen,” he said at a function held to celebrate the first anniversary of BIMRAD at the naval headquarters in the city yesterday (Saturday).

He was addressing the function as the chief guest.

Indian naval chief Admiral Karambir Singh was present as a special guest. Professor and chairman of the department of International Relations of Dhaka University (DU), Dr Rashed Uz Zaman, and Rear Admiral (retd.) Awal separately presented two different keynotes.

Admiral Chowdhury, also the chief patron of BIMRAD, said the blue economy is now considered a new ‘development space’ in Bangladesh. The proper management of marine resources and protection of marine environment and biodiversity would determine Bangladesh’s future development and economic growth.

“Shipping, seaports, ship-building and recycling, marine fisheries, sea salt, coastal tourism, ocean energy, land reclamation, maritime surveillance, human resources development and governance have been identified as key priority issues for the development of the blue economy,” he said.

The naval chief said the Indian Ocean region is increasingly being characterised by a multi-polar strategic environment. The Bay of Bengal, termed a “strategic space” by David Brewster, is certainly influenced by this complex and multiple maritime order, he observed.

“Therefore, we need to identify regional maritime security issues and corresponding conflicting and complementing interests amongst the littorals,” he added.

At the function, the first issue of the ‘BIMRAD Journal’ was released by the naval chiefs of Bangladesh and India.

Senior officers of the armed forces, diplomats in foreign missions at Bangladesh and retired military officers attended the function.
