Act decisively against all extortionists and hoodlums

Act decisively against all extortionists and hoodlums

Soon after the surprising discovery of many casinos or gambling dens in the capital, RAB on Friday arrested Golam Kibria Shamim, another Juba League leader with illegal arms, huge cash and kind. In the recent move to stop extortion and other illegal activities, the first to face the music were BCL’s central committee’s president, Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary, Golam Rabbani.

Following it, came the nabbing of Juba League Dhaka South Organising Secretary, Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, who used to run an illegal casino at Dhaka Wanderers’ Club in the capital’s Motijheel area.

Even more surprising was discovery of a torture cell at Eastern Kamlapur Tower that Khalid would use for forcing businessmen and professionals who had refused to pay extortion money to his men. The common people virtually numbed to see this.

The people of the country got surprised but at the same time showed great approval that at long last, the criminals who had made common people’s life miserable by their illegal activities were being caught. Gambling in our country is an illegal act and must be contained in its all forms, yet in gambling, it is the gamblers who lose or win; but extortion as well as corruption affects us all people.

Extortion by the powerful groups, whether they are from BCL or Juba League or even by law enforcers or any group for that matter, have become very rampant in our society.  It is because of extortion, footpaths in the capital could not be cleared; it is because of extortion on the highway, consumers have to pay more for what they buy, it is because of extortion (as well as corruption) public infrastructure such as roads and other facilities could not be built as per the plan.

What is sad is that the relevant authorities including the law enforcers knew all this illegal activity, but they did not move against the extortionists. It is our expectation now the law enforcers themselves would come clean and continue to nab all such people who have made mockery of rule of law and dispensing of justice.  The bottom line is: we have to lift our society from the present morass for the sake our future generations.
