Abrar murdered over suspected Shibir link: Police

Chhatra League expels Amit Saha
Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The police yesterday said that Abrar Fahad, who was a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death on suspicions of being a Chhatra Shibir member.

Monirul Islam, chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Unit (CTTC), made the remarks while talking to journalists at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP's) media centre.

"Based on confessional statements of the accused, we understand that Abrar was beaten to death on suspicion of being a Chhatra Shibir member. However, we'll be able to confirm whether the attackers had the intention of murdering him or they just beat him up after completion of the investigation,” he added.

In the meantime, Mujahidur Rahman Mujahid, a third-year student of the electrical and electronics engineering (EEE) department of BUET, Meftahul Islam Zion, ex-sports secretary, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, ex-deputy social service secretary, and Anik Sarker, ex-information and research affairs secretary of the BUET Chhatra League unit, have made confessional statements before the lower court.

Abrar, a second-year student of the EEE department, was beaten to death allegedly by some leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) BUET unit inside the university’s

Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Monday.

“We will complete our investigation before the deadline fixed for us by the lower court and then the whole truth will be out,” said Monirul.

He also mentioned that the investigation would be completed by early November.  The Detective Branch (DB) of the DMP will submit the charge-sheet in the case in November.

Responding to a question whether there was a police patrol team in BUET on that night of the incident, Monirul said: “A police team patrolled the BUET area till 3am on the day of the incident. But they didn't get any news of such a thing at that time."

UNB adds: Expelled BCL leader Mehedi Hasan Robein reportedly confessed before a court in Dhaka yesterday to his involvement in the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain recorded the confessional statement of Robein, expelled organising secretary of Buet unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

The court also sent him to jail. On October 8, Robein along with nine other BCL leaders and activists was put on a five-day remand over the gruesome murder.

As of Monday, 19 people have been detained in connection with Abrar's murder. Among them, 15 were accused in the case filed over his murder. The rest were detained because of their alleged involvement.

The BCL yesterday (Monday) expelled its BUET unit leader, Amit Saha, who has been arrested over the killing of Abrar. Amit was the deputy law affairs secretary of BUET's Chhatra League unit. The Chhatra League’s central executive body announced the expulsion in a media release yesterday.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the police detained Amit from a house in the capital’s Sabujbagh area on October 10.
