Remove trade barriers

Tipu urges India
BSS, Dhaka

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi yesterday urged India to remove all tariff and non-tariff barriers to help Bangladesh increase its exports to the neighbouring country.

“Bangladesh is the largest trade partner of India in the sub continent. The trade volume of the two countries is increasing day by day. But Bangladesh can’t export in India as per its expectation due to tariff and non-tariff barriers,” he said.

The minister was speaking at the ‘Indo-Bangladesh Stakeholders Meeting’ at Guwahati of Assam in India, said a press release here.

Tipu said it is essential to simplify the trade rules and regulations of India, especially in the North-East part, for increasing the export of Bangladeshi products.

He mentioned that Bangladesh faced difficulties for the sudden decision of India on onion import and Bangladesh could keep stable its market through importing from alternative sources, if the country knew the decision earlier.

Among others, Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Kumar Deb and Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Advisor Dr Moshiur Rahman attended the conference.
