The triennial council sessions of Dhaka South and North unit Swechchhasebak League were held in a space of two days amid festivities with the presence of hundreds of leaders and activists of the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League. The council session of Dhaka South unit Swechchhasebak League was held in the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday while Dhaka North unit council session was at Krishibid Institution yesterday.

However, the central leaders of AL have not yet announced the names of next leadership of the two units Swechchhasebak League.

Party insiders said the names of presidents and secretaries of the two units will be announced on November 16 when the central council session of Awami Swechchhasebak League will be held. About the future leadership of Swechchhasebak League, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said there will be no space on the new committee for corrupt, infiltrators and the people who tarnished the image of party president Sheikh Hasina and her government.

He said, “Young, honest, dedicated leaders, having clean images, will sit on the new committee through the council sessions.”

Meanwhile, former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra

League are aspirants to different positions of the organization and the party high-ups have also decided to induct former BCL leaders who had a contribution to the party in its bad times, into the new committees of AL’s different front organisations.

However, the former BCL leaders have already started hectic lobbying with the AL influential leaders including AL Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, to find them on the new committees.

When contacted Swechchhasebak League Joint General Secretary Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Sachchu said, “As far as I know our party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will give chance to fresh blood this time.”

Besides, former president of Dhaka North Unit Chhatra League Ishaq Miah and Monowarul Islam Bipul, incumbent organizing secretary of Dhaka North unit Swechchhasebak League are tipped to be the president and general secretary of the organization. The present committee’s general secretary Faridur Rahman Iran is also contesting for the president post.

Meanwhile, former BCL president of Jagannath University, Kamrul Hassan Ripon and Sheikh Anisuzzaman Rana, former general secretary Dhaka south unit Chhatra League are being touted as the president and general secretary in the committee of Dhaka South unit Swechchhasebak league.

Moreover, former BCL leaders Shahin Ahmed Sagar and Omar Faruk are also vying for the posts.

Awami Swechchhasebak League started its journey in 1997 through a convening committee led by Mockbul Hossain and Habibur Rahman Habib.

The first council session of the organisation was held in 2003 making AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Pankaj Debnath as president and general secretary respectively of the organization.

Swechchhasebak League incumbent President Mollah Mohamamd Abu Kausar and its General Secretary Pankaj Debnath have been removed from their respective posts for their alleged link to illicit casinos and other irregularities.

The triennial central council session of Awami Swechchhasebak League will be held on November 16 after seven years later from its last session was held in 2012.
