Illegal banana bazaar on busy Moheshpur road

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jhenidah
Illegal banana bazaar on busy Moheshpur road

An unauthorised banana market on a busy road in at Khalishpur Bazar in Moheshpur upazila in Jhenidah has been causing traffic congestions for years together. The local administration has failed to shift the market from the road.

Further, waste from banana and other parts of banana plants are stacked on the road side, creating health hazards. Some people have been throwing waste into Michael Madhusudan Dutta’s Kapatakkha river and polluting it. The waste has been replacing the water of the narrow river, locals said.

Locals and transport owners have demanded shifting of the market, held every Monday and Friday. The waste is left on the road, blocking movement of vehicles and causing traffic congestions.

Buses, trucks, microbuses and other transports, and even ambulances and fire service personnel move on the road every day. But with the banana market and the waste, vehicular movement is not easy. Sometimes vehicles are stranded for hours together.

The road turns risky in the monsoon, they said.

Farmer Rabiul Islam of Jalilpur in Moheshpur said he brings bananas to the market every Monday and Friday, as the market is an important business centre. But they face problems for want of adequate space in the market that sits on the main road.

Banana vendor Abdul Aziz belongs to Bagherpara upazila in Jashore. He said traders like him face severe problems in running the business on the road. They run their business risking their lives, while the local authorities keep mum.

Former chairman of the SBK union parishad, Sazzadul Islam, and incumbent chairman, Arifan Hasan Chowdhury Luthan, admitted the sufferings of the people during the banana market days twice a week. They said they could not shift the market for want of land in the locality. They could solve the problem within a few months if they managed to get land.

Acting upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), Sujan Sarker, and upazila parishad chairman, Maijuddin Hamid, said they will discuss the problem at the next monthly meeting of the Upazila Development and Coordination Committee.
