2 held with 2,850 yaba tablets

BSS, Dhaka

Security personnel detained two men with 2,850 pieces of yaba tablet in the domestic terminal area of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Monday.

The arrested men were identified as Mohammad Jamiul Islam, 21, hailed from Qazir Ballabadi village under Saltha thana in Faridpur district and Mohammad Arif Shikdar, 23, from Khayerhat village under Kasiani thana in Gopalganj district.

Both the detainees are the students of Faridpur Polytechnic Institute, said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent (ops and media) of Armed Police Battalion (APBn).

He said members of APBn rounded them up while they were suspiciously walking at the car parking zone adjacent to the domestic terminal at around 3 pm.

Drug trafficker gets life term

A court here on Monday sentenced a person to suffer life term imprisonment for possessing heroin in Godagari upazila of the district in 2015.

The convict, Abdul Latif, 70, was also fined Taka 10,000, in default, to suffer five months more behind the bar.

Additional District and Session Judge Emdadul Haque found the accused guilty and pronounced the verdict in his presence this noon.

According to the prosecution police arrested Abdul Latif with 2.4 kilograms of heroin from Madarpur area under Godagari upazila on April 26, 2015.

After investigation, police pressed charges against him. Advocate Shariful Islam conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Nazmul Haque Minut defended the accused.

One more EC employee detained

BSS, Chattogram

Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested one more employee of the Election Commission (EC) in a case filed over the providing of NID cards to Rohingyas.

The arrested was identified as Nazim Uddin, an office assistant of Chattogram EC office, said Mohammed Shahidullah, Deputy Commissioner CTU of CMP.

He was detained from his office after the confessional statement of Joynal.

Earlier, Kotwali Thana police arrested EC Office Assistant Joynal with a stolen official laptop after raiding his residence in city’s Andarkillah area on September 17.

According to the Joynal’s statement police earlier arrested an out-sourcing employee Mostafa Farooq.
