Mohakhali bus terminal to be shifted: Mayor Atiqul

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam yesterday said the bus terminal in Mohakhali should be removed. He said, “No inter-district bus can operate inside Dhaka under any circumstances. Besides, the terminal will be shifted to another place to facilitate the movement of city passengers here.” The mayor came up with the remarks at a view exchange meeting with bus owners and workers at Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the capital yesterday. The Mayor said, “No buses other than the ones registered to ply inside the capital will be allowed inside Dhaka. Inter-district buses create congestion on the main road. Mohakhali bus terminal has to be removed from here. No roadside parking of long-distance buses will be allowed beside Mohakhali Bus Terminal.” Atiqul Islam also exchanged views with them to find out the ways to reduce traffic congestion in the areas adjacent to the terminal.

Terming the establishment of the inter-district bus terminal in the heart of the capital as a mistake, the mayor said, “City dwellers are complaining about intensified traffic jam due to the terminal. Therefore, the terminal will be shifted from here. I don’t want to see roadside parking of buses beside the terminal.”

“The city corporation will assist in the construction of a new bus terminal. The decision to set up such a terminal in the city was a mistake. The policy makers of those times made the mistake for lack of foresight,” he added.

Khandaker Enayet Ullah, secretary general of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association said, 5,000 buses will be introduced in Dhaka to bring discipline in the capital’s transport system through bus route rationalisation.

He said, “There will be 1,000 AC buses and the passengers have to get tickets from ticket counters. Besides, smartcard system will be available. As a result, a disciplined transport system will be introduced in the capital.”

“There will be no racing competition if bus route rationalisation committee starts working,” he added.
